We dropped in after a drive and without a reservation. We were seated right away inside, as no tables were available outside...but on hearing that 'outside' was our preference the server arranged to reseat us as soon as a table was available.
Everything we ordered was really tasty. We got the impression the kitchen was overwhelmed...while enjoying our bottle of wine (and starters were nowhere in sight) we asked for some garlic bread and were informed that the kitchen operated 'first come first serve' and that the garlic bread might well be for dessert!
At any rate, we weren't in a hurry...so we enjoyed the lovely waterfront dining, the bird life, the friendly staff...and when the time was right, our yummy meal.
We shared oysters, lamb skewer, coconut prawns and soft-shell crab tacos and would order them all again. Irish coffees and dessert were a tasty end to our spontaneous date night. -

Excellent little riverside restaurant. To think I used to go here to buy worms and Paddle pops for fishing ......

Have been visiting Urunga every year for the past 12 years and my in laws always want to go to Anchors for dinner the night before we leave. Menu has not changed much, actually I think it's exactly the same as last year. Great spot on the river and you can watch the boats go by and they used to have pedal boats for guests (did not see them this visit). If you like over battered oily seafood, this is your place.
Our table had a mixture of dishes.. Oysters seemed to please (although they just need to be fresh). My black sesame 'tempura' king prawns were heavily battered, so much so I ate the first one then cut all the batter off the other four. Also the specks of black sesame added no Flavours or texture.
Mains were a mixture. My seafood mornay was pretty good, just a little too oily and the crab halves and random mound of salad veg made it difficult to eat. My wife has a summer salad with king prawns and found cleaning each prawn of its poo tube a chore. The seafood medley was a mountain of mixed seafood but again so much batter most of the food was left untouched. My son had the surf and turf which he loved .
Few our table had desert with mixed feedback. Good apple pie poor raspberry cheesecake, which was frozen and don't know how old.
Best part of the meal was the view and feeding the fish (most of my dinner) which live around the restaurant and are in constant feeding frenzy. Great entertainment.
Overall an expensive dining experience for sub standard seafood. (Go for the steak option)
Oh, the service was friendly and efficient.
Anchors would be excellent with a small revision of its menu. Remember quality over quantity! -

Fabulous breakfast. Great service. Opens at 8.00 every morning. Coffee smells great. Relaxing water views. We enjoyed our time and return regularly.
